Baking Bagels

After a pretty bad night’s sleep I was never going to achieve a huge amount today and I felt that the afternoon would probably be most profitably spent doing some baking. The ulterior motive was to end up with something nice to eat and to continue my quest to cook more than one thing out of each recipe book I own. I’ve been buying a lot of bagels from Asda lately and thought I’d have a go at baking my own. Baking is good fun but it’s also a very visual way of seeing how healthy the food that you normally eat is - much clearer than a list of ingredients. So, thanks to Nigella Lawson and her How to be a Domestic Goddess book we now have some really delicious bagels, and they didn’t take me all afternoon to prepare either!

As the photo shows, the bagels ended up looking more like croissants than the bagels you see on sale in the supermarket but they definitely tasted right. They’re a bit more solid than bread rolls (as the book suggested they ought to be) but have that lovely homemade bread taste. The ingredients seemed pretty similar to bread, the only difference in the preparation being the dunking them in hot water for a minute before baking in the oven. They were good fun to make and the one we shared earlier went very nicely with the beef and bean stew I’d made for dinner (what a goddess I am!?) so I think I’ll make them again, but not for a while.

    Yummy…
    You are getting well domesticated.
I am really looking forward to my next visit.

    Christine,
the Bagels do look good even though I suspect you only made them so that
you would have something to write about on your blog. Personally I spent yesterday
afternoon making a tarte tartin but you won’t catch me boasting about in to the
    entire blogging sphere.

    cheers,
    Neil
P.S. I also roasted a rack of lamb and cooked Jersualem Artichocks for the first time which were delicious and well worth tracking down and eating although I doubt you will find them in asda.
