I agreed at the last minute to fill a space in the team at the National Road Relays in Sutton Park this Saturday. The women’s relay has 6 legs, and finding 6 willing women was definitely an achievement in itself.

I was on 5th leg and managed a time of 20:29 for the 3 mile course, much slower than the first and fastest runners in the team but on a par with the 4th and 6th leg runners.

It’s been a while since I raced hard over such a short distance and it was certainly tough. For some reason my sides really ached at the end of it - maybe I twist more when I run fast. The best thing about it was that it made me realise how much I’ve missed speedwork. It woke me up a bit as I’ve been dawdling for the past few months, lazing around doing long, slow races. So, maybe I’ll go back to the track after all!

Muddy British Championships

We travelled to near Midhurst in Sussex this weekend for the British Orienteering Championships. I was running elite on the first day and had a fairly poor run to finish in 17th. I felt tired and unfocused, which was all down to poor pre-race preparation and a lack of sleep during the week. Petra, one of my Czech friends who travelled to the race with us, took some photos of the muddy assembly area and of some people finishing. The photo is of her boyfriend Petr coming in to win M21L. These are on our photo site.
