Running in the New Forest

Tuesday, October 18th, 2005

Today was the last Tuesday night run in the New Forest unassisted by battery-powered devices. I think we could have done with some torches this week, as heavy traffic on the M3 meant that we started late. The rain also reduced the visibility.

No one was injured and it was one of the fastest runs of the year, so the darkness didn’t prove to be too much of an obstacle.

I ran for England in the Senior Home Internationals this weekend. The courses on the Saturday were very long and very overgrown. This made running impossible, at least for people with legs as short as mine. It seemed more like jungle warfare than orienteering.

In the afternoon, we went to the Giants’ Causeway - definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area, especially on a clear windblown day as Saturday was.

The relays were good fun - you could run - and persuaded me not to hang up my (brand new!) compass quite yet.
